Library of Tibetan Works and Archives - Computer Section


The Computer Section, Library of Tibetan Works and Archives (LTWA) was started on July, 1987. The responsibility was to computerized the following Departments: 1.Administration, 2.Western Publication, 3.Tibetan Publication, 4.Foreign Reference, 5.Tibetan Manuscript, 6.Oral History, 7.Photographic Archives, 8.The Tibet Journal. 9.Research and Translation Bureau.

During that period, the biggest task was to computerized the Tibetan Manuscript Department, Tibetan Journal and Publication Departments. The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives has formed Tibetan Standard Code for Information Interchange (TSCII ) project ). In 1990, Mr. James Jay Woolsey, Computer Consultant from United States and Mr, Collin Hinwood, Computer programmer from New Zealand were invited. The Kashag has kind funded for this project. During that time, first development of Tibetan font and necessary jobs were taken placed. Also visited different institution in India. Thereafter, in 1991, LTWA received valuable grant from SIDA for the TSCII project and Tibetan Manuscript Department Computerization Project. The TSCII-Projects was completed and the Tibetan Manuscript Department projects is on going.

Mr.Mohan Tambe, Gist Coordinator, Centre of Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), Department of Electronic, Government. of India, Ganeshkhind, Pune University Campus, Pune-7 and LTWA computer Analyst Mr.Tashi Dhendup had developed Tibetan on Gist technology on 1992. Based on Gist-Tibetan Code, traditional Tibetan Sorting was developed. Thereafter, with the help of Mr.& Mrs. Gaikaiwari from Algorithm, Pune, Computer Analyst Mr. Jigme Tsering and Tashi Dhendup, have merged Tibetan sorting codes with SLIM (System for Library Information Management) program. This program works using Gist-card and access Gist Tibetan script. Title, Author and Subject indexing with traditional Tibetan Sorting is possible. It is ever first Tibetan Library program being developed. It is based on Anglo American System. It is a multi-language program. The Manuscript Department is using SLIM with Gist-card.

There was in needs of Tibetan Sanskrit Diacritical marks and high quality Tibetan and English type faces. Mr.Shanshank Bhatt, DRM, GIST Group at CDAC, and Mr.Tashi Dhendup, LTWA computer Analyst, have developed Tibetan fonts, matching Roman fonts and keyboards for DOS and Windows based applications. It can be used with Microsoft Word, MS-Excel, PageMaker, Quark Express, Corel Draw, 3-D Animator. Besides, necessary conversion utilities like ALP2ACI (Dos format to Windows), ACIP2WRI (Asian Classic input Project file format to Windows) Romanised Tibetan to Tibetan were developed.

Foreign Reference Section was computerized before the Tibetan Manuscript Department with kind assistant from Nor-aid. It has SCO UNIX base server with 1 dum terminal and 2 Gist terminals using Libsys,was developed at New Delhi.

Computer Analyst of LTWA take cares of all the hardware problems, updates the System and Applications . Time to time they give necessary software trainnings. All the departments of Library of Tibetan Works and Archives were computerized. They undertake the sophisticated designing and final computer typesetting, printing jobs.

Computer Analyst of LTWA helps to the Private Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, various monasteries, Central Tibetan Administrations (CTA), TCV School, Norbulingka Institute, Amnye Machen Institute, Tibetan Medical and Astro. Institute, Bureau of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, New Delhi, Tibetan Youth Congress and Tibetan Women's Association and private computer users.
