Tibetan Rare Photo Archives

LTWA has long planned to build up a photo archives of rare old photographs of Tibet and Tibetans forthepurpose of research and reference.

Numerous institutions, individuals and private Tibetan sources have rare collections of such photographs dating back to the 1 9th Century Tibet. For instance, Fani Mookerjee, an Indian photographer who accompanied the fame Pandit Rahul Sankrayana to Central Tibet has about 300 rare negatives of Tibet and important Tibetan personalities which cannot be obtained anywhere else in the world today. To purchase the set of rare negatives from Fani Mookerjee will cost us about Rs.5000 to 6000.

The negatives that we have acquired must be printed and enlarged. This is an expensive process. But as these photographs are rare and not available even in Tibet itseIf. they will serve very useful purpose for the reference and research materials of the Tibetan, Indian and Western students and scholars of Tibetology and Buddhism.

Frequent enquiries about such photographs have been received over the years from long standing scholars of Tibetology, universities and other related institutions of culture and learning.

Due to lack of funds, we have not been able to build up a rare photo archives to provide standard photo reference service to students and scholars of Tibetology. To build a standard photo archives for the above mentioned purpose, LTWA would require :-

1.Purchase of old and rare negatives, copying, developing and printing Rs. 10,000
2.Enlargement for preservation and reference Rs. 10,000
3.Total Rs. 20,000
