Thousands converged to listen His
Holiness in Portugal
Lisbon, Portugal, 14 September, TibetNet:
After successfully concluding a two-day visit to Barcelona, Spain, His
Holiness arrived in Lisbon in Porgual on 12 September.
On the same day, His Holiness addressed a press conference at hotel
Marriott. Portuguese media questioned its government for not according
official reception to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
On 13 September, around 2000 devotees packed the Lisbon university
auditorium and still many sat outside, listening to His Holiness' 3-day
teaching on Shantideva's A Guide to Boddhisattva's Way of Life (Chodjug).

Later afternoon, His Holiness was visited the Portuguese national
parliament and was accorded a welcome reception by Mr. Jaime Gama, the
Parliament Speaker.
The Speaker briefed His Holiness about his visit to China and a
Buddhist monastery in Beijing. They spoke on freedom of religious belief
and practice in China.
His Holiness the also spoke on the Middle-Way Approach to resolve the
issue of Tibet.
Later, His Holiness addressed the members of parliament's foreign
affairs committee and spoke on three resolutions passed by the UN General
Assembly in 1959, 1961 and 1965.
His Holiness also briefed the members on the peaceful round of
negotiations between the Central Tibetan Administration and People's
Republic of China, emphasizing the importance of the role of
parliamentarians of free democratic countries to promote human rights,
religious freedom and world peace.
Next day on 14 September, His Holiness met the country's former
president, Mr Jorge Sampaio, who also heads an important organization
affiliated to the UN.
Later on, His Holiness continued the 3-day teaching with a warm
official reception hosted by the Mayor of Lisbon.
His Holiness lauded the mayor's efforts to promoting religious
understanding and unity in the city, adding his own meeting with different
religious leaders including the Popes and attending inter-faith dialogues.
His Holiness will confer a public talk on the Power of Compassion at
Pavilion Atlantico, Lisbon, on 16 September.
